It's always rewarding when director Jeff Nichols and actor Michael Shannon reunite for one of their periodic films together. And their latest (at least in terms of release, as they've already made Loving together since this), Midnight Special is already garnering a lot of praise. Check out the latest trailer below.

Midnight Special finds Shannon as Roy, who discovers that this son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) has some special gifts – powers, that make him both a boon to humanity and, in the eyes of some, a terrible threat.

Partly that worry comes from government agents (led by Adam Driver) and an extreme religious sect overseen by Sam Shepard’s driven leader, who both decide that Alton belongs with them. The government views Alton as a potential weapon, whereas the religious types think he’s their saviour… Roy knows he has to go on the run alongside Kirsten Dunst and Joel Edgerton, who provides a little protection as they race for a secret location.

From the looks of the trailer alone, it has a dark-hued Amblinesque feel, a sort of E.T. meets Looper, but still with an identity all its own. Midnight Special will hit UK cinemas on April 8.
