Last September, word first broke that controversy magnet Mel Gibson was looking to further burnish his comeback by remaking a classic Sam Peckinpah western, The Wild Bunch. While seems an unlikely choice to have people think well of him, Gibson does now have Michael Fassbender, Jamie Foxx and Peter Dinklage in early talks to star.
The original, released in 1969, followed a group of outlaws in the dying days of the old west who attempt to pull off one last job as a new industrial era encroaches. At the time it was considered a hugely violent movie – and considering Gibson’s gore-soaked directorial output, he seems a likely choice to continue that tradition.
According to Deadline, none of the trio have locked in deals yet, but Gibson and co-writer Bryan Bagby, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer are apparently confident enough to start considering dates for shooting in the autumn.
Fassbender will be back on our screens in Dark Phoenix, which seems set to be the final X-Men film in its current Fox incarnation now Disney/Marvel own the studio and characters. It'll arrive on 5 June. Foxx is part of legal drama Just Mercy, due next year, while Dinklage is returning to voice Mighty Eagle in The Angry Birds Movie 2, winging its way here on 2 August. Oh, and he's also one of the key surviving players in a little show people have been watching...
