Things have gone a little quiet on the impending Best Video Game Adaptation Ever front. Not anymore. Assassin’s Creed, the movie that may right two decades of gaming wrongs on the big screen, has a big, noisy new trailer to share. Watch it below.

Michael Fassbender, of course, is our hero twice over in this one. He’s Callum Lynch, an alienated, violent drifter who discovers that he is descended from a 15th century Spanish assassin named Aguilar de Nerha. "Recruited" (read: threatened with death) by a corporation called Abstergo Industries, Lynch taps into his ancestral memories via a device called the Animus to gain the know-how to fight the Assassins' age-old nemeses, the Templars, in a battle for the future of humanity.

With Snowtown and Macbeth director Justin Kurzel behind the camera the Ubisoft game looks to be in good hands. The Aussie filmmaker has an eye for striking visuals and creates space for his gifted actors to do their dramatic bits with flair. In this one, Fassbender has Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams and Ariane Labed in support.

Assassin’s Creed parkours into cinemas on 1 January. Head here for the latest batch of stills from the film or here for a full primer.
