Though we thought Blue Valentine/The Place Beyond The Pines director Derek Cianfrance might see novel adaptation The Light Between Oceans as a chance to reunite with Ryan Gosling, that hasn’t come to pass. Still, he won’t be too disappointed, because he’s snared Michael Fassbender to star instead.
Based on M.L. Steadman’s bestselling novel, Oceans follows Tom Sherbourne, a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a tiny island half a day’s boat journey from the coast of Western Australia. When a baby washes up in a rowboat along with a dead body, he and his young wife Isabel decide to raise the child as their own. The child seems like a gift from God, and the couple’s reasoning for keeping her seduces the reader into entering the waters of treacherous morality even as Tom – whose moral code withstood the horrors of World War I – begins to waver. **Harry Potter **producer David Heyman is aboard to oversee the film, with DreamWorks providing the cash.
Cianfrance will move to make the film his next job once he completes Metalhead, the story of a former heavy metal drummer who blows his eardrums out and must adapt to a world of silence. As for Fassbender, he’s all over our cinemas at the moment, starring in oddball music comedy drama Frank and set to return to screens as the younger Magneto in** X-Men: Days Of Future Past**, which arrives next week.
