Having hoovered up awards only a couple of months ago for her work in The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander looks likely to be getting the same type of attention this year with The Light Between Oceans, and she’s bringing along Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz for the ride, if this new trailer is anything to go by.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, The Light Between Oceans looks to be a period weepy, set in a remote part of post-war Australia. Fassbender and Vikander play a married couple who live in a lighthouse, but cannot conceive children. When a baby washes ahore, it appears to be the answer to all their prayers – until the baby’s real mother, played by Weisz, shows up.
It’s based on the best-selling book of the same name by M.L. Stedman, and the screenplay has been adapted by Cianfrance. On the strength of this trailer, we can expect more of the same sweeping melodrama and gorgeous cinematography that we saw in Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond The Pines and Blue Valentine.
The Light Between Oceans is heading towards a September release, which places it right at the start of awards season. In the meantime, we can see Vikander in the distinctly less awardsy Jason Bourne, and Fassbender in the similarly less awardsy X-Men: Apocalypse.
