While we doubt he will bark “you’re only supposed to blow the coven doors off!” at any point (there’s still time, filmmakers!), Michael Caine will be lending his gravelly gravitas to a film that could probably use an injection of it, signing on to join The Last Witch Hunter.

Vin Diesel and recent recruit Rose Leslie are aboard for the long-gestating genre project, which sees Diesel as the titular crone-basher. He's a semi-immortal warrior who has been keeping humanity safe from the cauldron community for years and finds his latest battle in modern-day New York. See, there’s a powerful witch plotting to smite humankind with a deadly plague – rude – and Diesel is the one man who can stop the dastardly plan.

Except he’s not going to be alone, as he’ll forge an unlikely alliance with Leslie’s witch. While Variety confirmed the casting, Diesel actually first let slip the news to Collider, though neither mention what Caine will be doing in the film, and whether he’ll be on the side of good or evil. We’re sort of hoping he’s plotting terrible things this time around, after a long run of largely good-natured roles.

Breck Eisner is directing the film, which features a script that has been through several hands, most recently Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Caine will next show up in Kingsman: The Secret Service (due October 17) and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which launches on November 7.
