The chance for lots of shiny technology. For tough warrior types. For many, many, many explosions all in the apparent service of plot and character… You’ve got to admit, the idea of marrying a Ghost Recon adaptation with Michael Bay must’ve seemed pretty attractive to Ubisoft, which is why the company’s film department is now developing an adaptation with Warner Bros and the man behind Optimus Prime's move to the big screen.

Ubisoft’s plan to make a movie out of its Tom Clancy-based military strategy and FPS game was announced back in January, following the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, both of which are making their way – albeit with all the speed of an old Amstrad CPC 464 cassette game loading – to the screen.

For those unfamiliar with the fictional Recon team, they’re a unit of the Army Special Forces that basically acts as the president’s own strike team, taking out threats with all the latest weapons and gadgets. “These guys don’t belong to any specific organization,” Jean Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures tells Variety. “They’re in the field where the U.S. troops are not supposed to be. It’s a small team with very strong personalities and very specific skill sets. They’re using weapons nobody knows about but it’s very grounded. It’s not sci-fi.”

With Ubisoft looking to take a hand in the films based on its properties, Bay seems like a logical choice thanks to his action chops but also his experience working with Hasbro to bring the Transformers films to life. Yes, even if that means we get a Revenge Of The Fallen along the way. So far, Bay hasn’t committed to direct yet – after all, he’s busy with Transformers 4 and may want to try to make more small films before committing to what everyone involved hopes will be another big franchise – but he’ll definitely be involved.
