Mere days after an interview with Henry Cavill had the actor insisting he's still Superman for DC Films and Warner Bros., Variety brings word that the studio is still trying to figure out what to do with the Last Son of Krypton, and that it has been talking to the likes of JJ Abrams and Michael B. Jordan.
Abrams makes sense because A) he's proven he can bring big franchise efforts to the screen and B) he just signed a pricey deal with Warners. Jordan's more surprising, though he'd be a great shout as Supes. The trade mag's report however, indicates that he's unlikely to commit even if it were offered, given that there's no director or script in place for a future Superman film and Jordan is busy producing and acting in a variety of movies and shows.
The wider angle of the piece is about Warner Bros. looking to right the DC ship, building on the success of Aquaman, Shazam! and Joker, with plans for more R-rated superhero projects (both Cathy Yan's Birds Of Prey and James Gunn's The Suicide Squad are candidates for the rating) as counter-programming to Disney and Marvel's more family friendly approach. Hopes are high for Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman 1984 and there are ongoing developments on bringing in other characters, such as Green Lantern, hopefully with a little more success and fewer chances for Ryan Reynolds to crack meta-gags about it.
