Laika Entertainment does seem to like the supernatural side of things: most of their movies so far have featured some element of strange powers or weird situations. And that continues with the company's latest, Kubo And The Two Strings, which has a new trailer online.
The film features Art Parkinson as the clever and kind-hearted Kubo, who lives quietly looking after his mother and telling fantastical stories to people in his seaside town. But when he accidentally summons a mythical, ancient spirit that is pursuing an age-old vendetta and learns that all the tall tales he thought he was telling are actually true, Kubo has to go on the run. He joins forces with a no-nonsense Monkey (Charlize Theron) and costumed sidekick Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) for a quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his father’s death. With his shamisen (a magical musical instrument), Kobo will have to channel his family's powers to battle gods and monsters.
The largely Western voice cast seems unusual given its Asian setting, and the company could face questions about its choices, which also include includes Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Rooney Mara, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagwa and Brenda Vaccaro. But from the looks of the visuals, Team Laika has pushed themselves further than ever for what could be a fun quest movie. Kubo And The Two Strings will be with us later this year.
