Big Little Lies has been cleaning up at TV awards ceremonies, bringing home Golden Globes and SAG awards, among others. Now Season 2 seems set to repeat the trick, hiring kudos-magnet Meryl Streep to join its already impressive cast.
While the show had a seemingly self-contained story, which explored murder, domestic abuse, lust and adultery among parents in Monterey, California, the success of the first run has spurred HBO and the people behind the show – including director Jean-Marc Vallée, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman (who were producers as well as starring) – to develop a new season, which will adapt a new story from Lies author Liane Moriarty. And while Vallée directed all of the first season, he's stepping back to be an executive producer this time, with Andrea Arnold taking shot-calling duties for the new run of seven episodes.
Streep is aboard to play – spoiler alert in case you've yet to see the show – the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard), who arrives in the coastal town to get answers about his death and to check in on her grandchildren. Film-wise, Streep is on UK screens now in The Post for which she received her latest Oscar nomination and will be seen in both Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Mary Poppins Returns.
