Last year, it was reported that Julianne Moore and Chris O'Dowd would star for director Nicole Holofcener in real-life crime tale Can You Ever Forgive Me? Fast-forward to now, and things are different, with Melissa McCarthy in the lead and Marielle Heller behind the camera.
Holofcener adapted the script from the late Lee Israel’s 2008 memoir, but thanks to the schedule shifts, is no longer available to call the shots. The story finds Israel (McCarthy) as a respected biographer who runs into financial difficulties. So she starts fabricating the letters of famous dead writers and celebrities in order to drum up the money to keep a roof over her head. But when her work begins to raise suspicion, she goes one step further and starts stealing actual letters from library archives, selling them through a fence she meets at a bar. All the while, however, the FBI is closing in on the scheme.
Heller, who made a splash with The Diary Of A Teenage Girl, is now scheduled to start shooting early next year. Variety's story makes no mention of O'Dowd, but given that things won't kick off for a while, there'a chance he could still be part of the film.
McCarthy will next be seen in The Boss, due here on June 10 and the new Ghostbusters, which arrives on July 15.
