Given some of the critical and audience reactions to their shared cinematic output, you might think that Melissa McCarthy and husband/creative partner/director Ben Falcone, the idea of creating and starring in a new series called God's Favourite Idiot would appear to be prime bait for headline writers and twitter users. And yet here they are, doing that very thing for Netflix.

Michael McDonald, who worked with them on their previous TV outing, Nobodies (clearly tempting fate with titles is in their DNA), will direct and executive produce on the show, which finds mid-level tech support employee Clark Thompson (Falcone) falling for co-worker Amily Luck (McCarthy) at exactly the same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God. Also, there’s roller skating, a lake of fire and an impending apocalypse.

The pair's latest film, Superintelligence, is out now in the US on HBO Max, and arrives on UK cinema screens on 11 December.
