Just when it looked like Tony Scott might be sending a missile the size of the Chrysler Building blazing past DreamWorks Animation’s latest ‘toon, the devious plans of a bald super-villain have managed to fend off the speeding train thriller to hold on at the top of the US box office. Megamind is in first place for a second week, adding $30 million to its total, while Unstoppable hit the buffers in second, scoring a decent $23.5 million.
Due Date slipped down one place to third with $15.5 million, but it was still enough to keep Skyline and Morning Glory from sneaking into the top three. The alien invasion pic from the Brothers Strause won’t exactly be etching them into the annals of history just yet, but an $11.6 million opening weekend is pretty good considering the movie was made for a fair chunk less than that. Morning Glory, on the other hand, is showered in something other than its title, opening weakly with $9.6 million at sixth. Paramount will likely be hoping that good word of mouth could see it hanging on as a sleeper title.
Tyler Perry’s latest, For Colored Girls, sank down to sixth with $6.7 million, and Red dropped to seventh and $5.1 million. Paranormal Activity 2 made $3 million in eighth, while **Saw 3D **was ninth with $2.7 million. And hanging around the bottom – or should that be the ass – of the top 10 is Jackass 3D, which added $2.3 million for a current total of $114.7 million. Sweat cocktails to celebrate!
