When The Walking Dead wrapped up its second season, we were introduced to a cloaked figure wielding a katana and leading two armless zombies by chains. That, of course, was the first introduction for non WD comic readers to fan-favourite character and all-round kick-ass woman Michonne. Danai Gurira will be bringing her to life in the third season, and Entertainment Weekly has the first picture of her, which you can see below.

As has been standard for the show so far, the telly incarnation of the character and her storyline will be subtly different from the comic book origins.

“The essence of the character — her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne — remains intact from the comics,” Walking Dead comic creator and show executive producer Robert Kirkman tells the magazine. “But like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up to speed, and they’ll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.”

Naturally, there will be some debate as to whether the changes work on screen, but we’ll have to wait until October to see what they do with her. For more on Michonne, head to EW’s site.

And if you’re one of many eagerly awaiting the next season, you can take a look at the first video blog from the cast and crew, which includes Andrew Lincoln describing the upcoming episodes’ pace as “darker, harder, faster, deeper.” At least, we think he’s talking about the show…
