The last time Tom Hardy was involved in espionage, it was for the rather excellent Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Now he’s back in the spy game, albeit for the slightly less serious looking This Means War, co-starring Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine. The trailer has arrived over at Apple.
Having trundled through development for several years and recruited (then lost) the likes of Sam Worthington, Seth Rogen and Justin Timberlake, This Means War takes a Mr & Mrs Smith-style look at bromance gone sour when romance rears its lady-shaped head. Hardy and Pine are two of the CIA’s finest operatives, never happier than when they’re working together to take down terrorists or rogue nations.
But their friendship is shattered when they discover they’re both dating the same woman (Witherspoon). Jealousy and rivalry take over, and soon they’re employing all the high-tech tricks of their trade to ruin each other’s chances. You know, the tricks of the trade that should be being employed to keep us all safe. Tch… Boys will be boys.
Coming from McG, this frankly seems like a backward step to the indulgences of Charlie’s Angels. Still, you know things are going to blow up real good when he’s around. We’ll get a chance to judge properly when the film hits on February 17 next year.
