Well here's a romantic pairing one doesn't see every day. Ewan McGregor is to play the object of Jim Carrey's affections in I Love You Philip Morris, a dark prison-set comedy. It's written and will be directed by Bad Santa writers Glen Ficarra and John Requa.
Based on a true story, this tells the tale of Steven Russell (Carrey), married father and conman who ended up in a Texas prison, where he fell for his cellmate Philip Morris (McGregor). His love inspired him to daring, and he escaped from prison four times as a result, once dying his prison clothes green to look like doctors' scrubs, once faking his own death and signing his own death certificate. However, while Morris was finally released, Russell got another 144 years on his sentence.
Filming is due to start in the spring after Carrey finishes his performance capture work in multiple roles of Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol.
The directing debut of the Bad Santa pair makes this one to watch out for, and it's good to see a star as big as Carrey get over the oft-discussed stigma against playing gay characters that still exists in Hollywood. So what do we think? Can this break Carrey's run of bad luck at last?
