The Magic Castle is one of those places in Los Angeles that is out in the daylight and yet shrouded in mystery. For while you can see it from the outside on tourist jaunts, you can’t go in unless you’re invited by a member. But Radar Pictures and 20th Century Fox think that could make for a compelling film. McG agrees, as he’s now stepped aboard to direct.

Andrew Barrer and Gabe Ferrari* are writing the script, but nothing is yet known about what the story might be. Still, given that the place is filled with labyrinthine corridors, retro décor and all sorts of magic tricks, it sounds like it could be ideal place for a horror film or a family adventure.

The Castle’s history – at least in its current incarnation – stretches back to 1963, when it was turned into a private magic club. High profile members have included Cary Grant and Johnny Carson, and both Steve Martin and Neil Patrick Harris are on the books. The latter two also perform there from time to time.

So there are definite possibilities here, even if we worry about another Haunted Mansion. Wands crossed this turns out better than that. Any film will have to wait a little while, though: McG is about to start shooting **Three Days To Kill **with Kevin Costner starring. But he’ll likely get around to the Castle film after that.

*A man with a name that sounds like he should be attempting illusions in the Castle much in the fashion of Tony Wonder.
