No, **T****he Paperboy **is not another video game film, and Matthew McConaughey will not be seen sporting a backwards cap, peddling his bike like a loon to deliver copies of the daily rag before his time limit runs out. Instead, it’s asexy new thriller that will see him co-starring with Tobey Maguire, Zac Efron and Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara.
Adapted from Pete Dexter’s 1995 novel, the plot finds a Miami Times reporter heading back to his hometown to investigate the shady circumstances around the incarceration of a death row inmate. While there, he develops a steamy relationship with a local beauty (we’re going to assume Vergara will be taking that role, not Efron.)
Getting the book on screen has been something of a passion project for Broken Embraces’ Pedro Almodovar, who developed the idea alongside Dexter for years. But now he’s handing the directorial reigns over to Precious’ Lee Daniels, who is adding the film to his To Do list. There’s no word on when it’ll kick off shooting, but backers Millennium Films are busy selling the rights at Cannes.
