After ruling the Stateside box office roost for weeks, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle has finally been toppled. The challenger to get the job done? Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which opened to $23.5 million, according to studio estimates.
Despite delays caused by an on-set accident that injured star Dylan O'Brien, the third instalment of the YA adaptation maintained its momentum. While the Maze Runner movies haven't been huge blockbusters, they've been reliable performers, and there was clearly some pent-up need to see what happens next. More running, but little in the way of mazes (unless you count office block corridors), as it turns out.
Jumanji's team has little reason to be upset, however; it may have dropped to second place, but it still earned $16.4 million, which is no mean feat after six weeks in the charts. Domestically, the movie is now on $338 million, while its worldwide haul stands at an impressive $822 million. Scott Cooper's Western drama Hostiles expanded its platform release and galloped into the top 10 at third place, adding $10.2 million to its coffers. The Greatest Showman fell to fourth on $9.5 million while The Post rounded out the top five with $8.8 million.
War thriller 12 Strong fell badly, down from second to sixth on $8.6 million, while heist pic Den Of Thieves slipped from third to seventh and $8.3 million.
Getting a boost from its haul of Oscar nominations, The Shape Of Water expanded its own release and arrived in the top 10 at eighth, earning $5.7 million as it did. Guillermo del Toro's acclaimed latest has so far made $37.6 million in the States and $47.4 million globally, though it still has yet to open in a variety of international venues, including the UK. Ninth was Paddington 2 with $5.7 million and at 10th we have the latest Bollywood breakout as Padmaavat earned $4.2 million for 10th.
