The day before America effectively shuts down for flag waving and fireworks on the Fourth Of July holiday seems like an odd time to release the first look at a superhero whose primary audience is in the States. But perhaps the team behind Max Steel are hoping to take advantage of the quieter news arena to generate more impact for the first look at the young hero in the toy-based pic.
For those who need a Steel briefing, the film is based on the Mattel superhero toy line-turned-‘toon, and is set up as an origin story that introduces 16-year-old Max McGrath (Ben Winchell). He joins forces with a powerful alien known as Steel, and uses his new extra-terrestrial powers to discover strange secrets and save the world from a terrible threat. All that while dealing with puberty. Tough gig…
Sorority Row director Stewart Handler is in charge of shot-calling for this one, based on a script by Thor: The Dark World’s Christopher Yost. The cameras have been rolling in North Carolina since April, and the cast also includes Andy Garcia, Maria Bello, Mike Doyle, Ana Vallafane and Lawrence Kao. Max Steel is expected to arrive at some point next year. For more of the images, head to Moviefone’s site.
