Attempts to make a new movie based on the He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe property have been a frustrating slog for more than one studio. Now Sony and Mattel have reached a crucial step (albeit one the project has hit before): indie directors Aaron and Adam Nee have been hired to direct it.

The story of Eternia's mighty warrior (transformed from the merely strong Prince Adam using his powerful magic sword) and his battle against the evil Skeletor brought us both the animated TV series and the much-mocked but often enjoyed 1987 Dolph Lundgren movie.

David Goyer has been involved with the new take on the characters for a while now, waiting a new draft of the script and briefly considering directing himself before scheduling issues scuppered that idea. The Nee brothers, meanwhile, have worked on shorts and indie movies, winning acclaim for their 2015 film Band Of Robbers. They mark the latest in a trend of filmmakers drawn from the low budget world to handle big movies. Sony wants the film in cinemas by 18 December next year.
