Fighting murderous alien chameleons in the Antarctic would leave anyone in need of a stiff drink, which might explain why Mary Elizabeth Winstead has opted to follow The Thing with **Smashed.
If everyone signs on the appropriate lines, the indie drama will team Winstead with Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, in a story about a couple whose relationship is based on "a mutual love of alcohol". Sadly, this leads not to Nick-and-Nora style adventuring, but AA meetings, where Winstead is sponsored by Octavia Spenser (The Help). Parks & Recreation's Nick Offerman is in talks to play an assistant headmaster at the school where Winstead teaches.
Smashed is being described as a loose reworking of Blake Edwards' Days of Wine and Roses, although it sounds as if the Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick roles have been reversed for Winstead and Paul. The word "dramedy" also suggests it'll be considerably less gruelling than its progenitor. Will it be somewhere further along the lines of 28 Days?
All will be revealed in the fullness of time. James Ponsoldt (Off the Black) is the writer/director, and shooting starts shortly.
