Among the many (many) announcements Disney made at its big D23 event in August was word of several new shows in development from Marvel for the Disney+ streaming service. Among them was She-Hulk, and now we know that Rick And Morty veteran writer Jessica Gao is on to be the executive producer.
Gao, who wrote the episode introducing the Pickle Rick character that has gone down in Morty (and pop culture) history, won an Emmy for her work, and has credits on shows such as Silicon Valley, Corporate and, in keeping with the Disney theme, the upcoming Star Wars Detours animated series. In fact, her animation experience points to the potential for She-Hulk to be animated, but Marvel has not announced the format yet.
The character of She-Hulk AKA Jennifer Walters, is actually Bruce Banner’s cousin in the comics, gaining her relative’s gamma-radiated superpowers after a blood transfusion required after a near-fatal shooting.
By day, she operates as a successful lawyer, taking on cases in superheroic law—occasionally dabbling in super-powered fisticuffs on the side as She-Hulk. Although in the past it was something that differentiated her from Hulk, her powers kind of work in a similar fashion to how Hulk’s work by the time of Avengers: Endgame, where Jennifer retains her full language capacity and her personality when in her green-hued form. It'll be interesting to see how Disney handles that character being on screen a lot, though if Avengers: Endgame taught us anything, it's that Marvel has become rather good at the Hulk. She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee and John Buscema.
With luck, there's scope for Mark Ruffalo's Bruce to show up (especially if he only has to find room on his schedule to step into a recording booth), but we don't yet when it might hit screens. But at least we know that UK Disney+ audiences will be ready.
