The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, befitting its name, a big place. One that can contain multitudes, you have to figure, a multiverse. And with such a huge range of comic storylines and characters to mine, it makes sense that the later phases of the movies' development would include yet more new ideas. After sites began reporting whispers about The Eternals, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has now confirmed that they're a definite possibility.
“Eternals is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate,” he told The Wrap this weekend at a junket for Avengers: Infinity War.
For those unfamiliar, the Eternals were created by comic legend Jack Kirby in 1976 as a race of ancient human beings created a million years ago by the cosmic entities known as the Celestials. They accelerated the evolution of a handful of subjects and gave them the genetic potential to mentally manipulate limited quantities of cosmic energy, as well as other superhuman traits. Marvel has reportedly been meeting with screenwriters to hear pitches about the characters, but since it's early days, don't expect to see them popping up just yet.
Besides, the company has enough on its plate right now between the two new Avengers films, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Captain Marvel and the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which we recently learned will see Peter Parker heading beyond the US, and kicks off shooting this summer. Then, of course, there's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 and a Black Panther, which Feige has said will happen when director Ryan Coogler is ready to make it.
Finally, Feige has told Collider that the company will be skipping the usual hoopla in Hall H at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. “It will be an off year," he says. "Which is what we did after the first Avengers movie and what we’ve done every few years. There will be a tenth anniversary presence at Comic-Con but no Hall H panel."
Avengers: Infinity War is out Thursday.
