With Avengers: Infinity War quite literally leaving the fate of half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the balance, Marvel Studios have been understandably quiet about announcing any films set after next year's Avengers 4. But that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from swirling about Black Widow’s long-awaited, much-mooted solo film – and now there’s a potential director in the frame.
According to Deadline, Australian director Cate Shortland is the frontrunner to take on Natasha Romanoff’s own adventure. Her last work was the critically-acclaimed Berlin Syndrome, a kidnap thriller about a woman held captive by a man after a one night stand. With a Black Widow film possibly set to focus on the character’s traumatic past and the ‘red’ on her ledger, Shortland sounds like a fitting match.
She's not the only one in the running for the job though – Marvel is reportedly whittling down a list of female filmmakers to oversee the project, with British director Amma Asante and Sundance favourite Maggie Betts also said to still be in with a shot. There's still around 10 months until Avengers 4 determines the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it remains to be seen how long Marvel Studios will play their cards close to their chest before announcing their upcoming slate.
