Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited return to the gangster genre is one step closer to completion, with news that his latest organised-crime opus has wrapped shooting. The director’s assembled an incredible cast — De Niro! Pacino! Keitel! Pesci! — for his Netflix-financed mob drama The Irishman, and their work in front of the camera is now complete.
The film, based on Charles Brandt’s novel I Heard You Paint Houses, tells the story of hitman Frank Sheeran (De Niro), who alleged on his deathbed to have committed the unsolved murder of American Teamster union leader Jimmy Hoffa. Scorsese posted about the end of shooting on Instagram, writing: “That’s a wrap! Thank you to the many people who made this possible.”
The Irishman marks the first collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro since 1995’s Casino, while Pesci came out of retirement specifically for the film. While photography has wrapped, the film won’t be out until 2019, with a long post-production period due to the amount of effects shots required. With the plot flicking between time periods, large chunks of the film are set to see actors be ‘de-aged’, similarly to the effects used on Michael Douglas and Kurt Russell in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
