Mark Wahlberg May Be Off To Broken City

Despite most of the US spending the day yesterday gorging on turkey and trimmings, newly-minted Uncharted star Mark Wahlberg seemed intent on having news stories about himself slip into the world, as MTV reports that he’s interested in teaming up with Allen Hughes for **Broken City.

Describing the possible project as “one of the best unproduced screenplays, an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talent. It's in the vein of those old classics, Chinatown, or even LA Confidential.”

Strong words and hefty comparisons. So what is it? First scripted by Brian Tucker as a writing sample, it landed on the Black List and was quickly snapped up by John Malkovich’s production company. City focuses on Billy Taggart, a former cop who was thrown off the force after shooting a 16-year-old. Now an embittered private eye, he’s hired by one of the men competing to be mayor of New York.

The script takes dark twists and turns, sees Billy and his girlfriend dealing with her stalker winning parole from prison and sounds like it’ll be a meaty role for Wahlberg, assuming he stays attached and it goes ahead. Hughes, who last worked on Book of Eli with brother Albert, hasn’t always had the best luck with his movies, but maybe this will be the one to get him back to the successful days of Dead Presidents.

The only disappointing thing about this otherwise exciting prospect? It can’t compete with Wahlberg’s comments on The Happening.
