With filming now delayed, as the production team waits out the weather in Japan and leading man Hugh Jackman heads off to star in Tom Hooper’s new version of Les Miserables, it seems that The Wolverine’s director James Mangold is taking the opportunity to run the script through the re-write machine courtesy of Unstoppable’s Mark Bomback.
As you’ll likely already be aware, the new outing for Logan will see the freshly amnesiac anti-hero looking for a place in the Japanese criminal underworld. There’ll he’ll find both love and problems, with the majority of the latter provided by the evil Silver Samurai.
But as Variety reports, there will also be another thorn in his side, as he’ll face off against Viper, credited here as the secretary for Japan’s Minister of Justice. But fans of Marvel comics know she has a much deeper history than that, having trained with Wolverine at one point with mentor Seraph. She’s also had more friendly dealings with Silver Samurai.
While we’re not sure Christopher McQuarrie is the sort of writer who really needs to be re-written, he is likely too busy to do any additional work himself thanks to preparing to film Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in One Shot.
Bomback, meanwhile, has been something of a go-to guy for Fox and other studios with the likes of Die Hard 4.0, the new **Total Recall **and Jack the Giant Killer on his CV. He’s also written for Jackman before, cranking out the script for Deception. Not sure we want to hold that up as an example of his abilities, though…
The Wolverine should kick off shooting next year in Tokyo and Vancouver.
