Beyond the phrase “with great power comes great responsibility”, there is another hard and fast rule for the modern iterations of the** Spider-Man** story: with a new Peter Parker comes a new Aunt May. And according to Variety, Marvel and Sony have zeroed in on Marisa Tomei as their choice.
It’s not yet a done deal, apparently – which might explain why there has been no big Marvel or Sony statement at the time we write this. But while it technically exists within a web of rumours, it feels fairly solid, and Tomei will likely be on set with Holland and director Jon Watts.
The next question, of course, is whether her introduction comes earlier than that – Holland’s Spider-Man will make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War before he launches properly in a couple of years, and there’s a slim chance that Tomei could show up there, though it’s doubtful.
Marvel and Sony are still looking for the best writer – or writers – to bring Spider-Man back to our screens for his latest incarnation, but whatever happens, the first stand-alone Spidey film is scheduled for July 28, 2017. And given the outcry over Tomei’s relativelty young age for the role, woe betide the studios if they decide to re-cast the characters again and we have a teenaged Aunt May caring for a toddler superhero…
