We've already had a couple of 'another actor joins big ensemble movie' stories this morning, and this one will be no different. Apart from the names and the film, obviously. This time it's Adam McKay's financial drama The Big Short, and the actress in question is Marisa Tomei. She joins the already-aboard Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Melissa Leo,
Anchorman director McKay has been developing this one for a while now, working up something very different from his usual comedy brand. It's based on Moneyball author Michael Lewis’ book, subtitled 'Inside The Doomsday Machine', and follows several key people who had roles in creative the toxic credit bubble that sent the financial markets into panic mode over the last decade.
Also announced as having just signed up are Tracy Letts, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Byron Mann, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Finn Wittrock, although it's not clear who any of them are playing at this point.
We do know that Carell is Steve Eisman, a money manager who shorted subprime mortgages for FrontPoint Partners, while Gosling is Deutsche Bank trader Greg Lippmann. Bale is Michael Burry, the founder of the Scion Capital and one of the first people to predict the coming crisis. And Pitt, in more of a supporting part, is Ben Hockett, a partner at Cornwall Capital.
Pitt is also among the producers, and production is already underway in New Orleans. There are no release dates in place yet. Lewis' book is published in the UK by Penguin.
