Three years on from Suicide Squad, and the follow-up to DC’s anti-hero team-up is still in the early stages – but a continuation of sorts is underway in Birds Of Prey, bringing Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn back to the big screen. Cathy Yan’s crime-comic saga is now in production, teaming Quinn up with three other costumed heroes – Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, and Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya – on a mission to save a young girl from a nefarious crime boss. With work on the film underway, Robbie has shared the first image of herself back in character as Harley Quinn.
UPDATE: A teaser trailer for the project has now dropped, with a few tantalising glimpses of the members of the titular hero group. There's also a shot of Ewan McGregor, who's playing villain Black Mask – though he's in a more smart-casual outfit here. Watch the clip below.
With Robbie’s Quinn being one of the undoubted highlights of Suicide Squad, her return here is a welcome on – and by the sounds of the project this will be an outwardly feminist blast, moving away from the troublesome relationship politics between Quinn and the Joker. As the film’s official full title has it, Birds Of Prey will also be about the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn.
With cameras on Birds Of Prey now rolling, the film will be arriving in cinemas early next year, currently pencilled in for a 7 February 2020 release.
