You might think that after overseeing the box office bomb that was the Conan The Barbarian reboot, Marcus Nispel might be spending some time cooling his heels in Director Jail. But no! He’s getting back on the horse with Relativity Media’s comic adaptation Hack/Slash.
The title, which riffs on the Final Girl scenario of slasher movies, finds Cassie Hack as the lone survivor of a massacre by a crazed school dinner lady. Instead of hiding for the rest of her life, Cassie dedicates herself to hunting down killers with the help of giant, gasmask-sporting protector Vlad. Created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli, the book puts a spin on the usual OTT heroine character and has been in development for a while now, ever since Universal’s Rogue Pictures snapped up the rights.
When Rogue withered, Relativity Media picked it up and has been looking for the right writing/directing team. It’s not actually the first time Nispel has been associated with the film, but it was last handed to fellow former ads director Frederik Bond. Now, though, Nispel is back on board. While we’re a little concerned given his spotty history (**The Texas Chainsaw Massacre **remake was serviceable, the less said about Pathfinder or his Friday The 13th redo the better), but at least he has slasher experience.
