If you’ve not already seen the full trailer for Netflix’s new series Maniac, step this way immediately. Cary Fukunaga’s comedy-drama looks trippy, weird and properly amazing, with a stellar leading duo in Emma Stone and Jonah Hill – reuniting for the first time since Superbad. This time they’re patients undertaking an experimental drug trial that promises to cure any kind of mental malady – and by the looks of things, it sends them spinning into a multitude of (likely imagined) realities.
Empire has a brand new image from the series, as seen in the forthcoming new issue, showing the pair in their institutional jumpsuits.
Fukunaga told Empire a little more about the lead roles of Owen Pilgrim (Hill) and Annie Landsberg (Stone), explaining: “Jonah’s character comes from a wealthy family but he is the runt. He’s been pooped on his whole life. Emma’s character carries a lot of self-loathing. She is self-harming.” Read more about the show in Empire’s Greatest Star Wars Characters issue, on sale Thursday 9 August – you can pre-order a copy here. Maniac will arrive on Netflix on 21 September.
