Even with his side job of making giant DC superhero movies, James Wan's first love remains the low-budget horror where he started his career. And he's back in that particular playground with Malignant. His latest chunk of terror has a new trailer online, which also features the director talking about why he chose to make it.

With a story cooked up by Wan, Akela Cooper and Ingrid Bisu (with Cooper on script duty and Bisu appearing in the film), the movie focuses on Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who in her younger days was rescued from a traumatic upbringing by a foster family. To protect herself, she created an imaginary friend, Gabriel, but it appears he's more trouble than he's worth.

As an adult, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jake Abel and Jacqueline McKenzie are all in the cast, and the movie arrives on UK shores on 10 September, the same day as the US, which will see a dual premiere in cinemas and on HBO Max.
