Despite concerns and some complaints about it remaking a perceived classic, the new version of The Magnificent Seven did well enough to land at the top of the American box office this weekend. The new Western made $35 million according to studio estimates.

With Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke among the cast, Antoine Fuqua's latest also rode roughshod over mixed reviews to claim to the number one spot ahead of its one wide release competition, Storks. Still, the new animated adventure was targeted at families and earned a healthy $21 million.

That might not seem huge compared the hauls of Disney or DreamWorks, but Storks benefitted from a thriftier $70 million budget.

Sully was knocked from its perch, but landed soundly at third place with $13.8 million and is closing in on $100 million in the US alone. Bridget Jones's Baby fell to fourth on $4.5 million. Oliver Stone's Snowden dropped to fifth with $4.1 million.

In sixth place, Blair Witch earned $3.9 million, while fellow horror pic Don't Breathe slipped to seventh and $3.8 million. Suicide Squad remains in the chart, dropping one place to eighth and $3.1 million.

At ninth, thriller When The Bough Breaks earned $2.5 million, while Kubo And The Two Strings took a slight knock from the new animated competition and fell to 10th with $1.1 million.
