The beasts may be fantastic on the big screen, but they’re pretty damn good on the small as well. The Magicians, Syfy's series based on the novels of Lev Grossman, begins airing its second season in January, and the network has released the first trailer for it.

Season one introduced the students and magical world of Brakebills University, but in year two things have shifted over to the fantasy realm of Fillory and the battle to save both magic and the world.

Offers Jason Ralph, who plays Quentin Coldwater, “Season one was about entering the worlds for the first time and being surprised by them; the scope of them was rather narrow. Now we have the opportunity to really open that up and explore the complexities of all these worlds and how they start affecting each other, thematically.”

As was the case in year one, the Grossman novels are definitely an influence, though things have splintered off from them and likely will continue to as the series goes on. “We fell in love with the books and it’s a story that we’re really passionate and excited to tell,” he says. “But how we’re getting to them is different. We actually diverge even more, but what’s funny is that even as we get further away, we also have opportunities to get closer and investigate them more specifically, because we have a broader context for them.”
