It has been seven years since Madonna last stepped behind the camera as director for W.E.. While she's been developing other potential films, it appears she's zeroed in on a new prospect for a follow-up, agreeing to direct drama Taking Flight for MGM.
The studio has been developing the film since 2015, when it bought up the rights to Michaela and Elaine DePrince's memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan To Star Ballerina. Camilla Blackett has adapted the screenplay, which will chronicle DePrince's amazing journey from war-torn Sierra Leone to the heights of ballet stardom.
Adopted by Elaine snd Charles DePrince at the age of four, she lived and studied in the US and debuted as a professional dancer at 17 in South Africa's Joburg Ballet. She was part of Beyonce's 2016 Lemonade video and is now a soloist with the Dutch National Ballet. "Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity," Madonna says in a statement carried by Variety. "We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life." There's no schedule for the film just yet.
