When the dust finally settles from this weekend’s box office scrap across the pond, Adam Sandler may look back and wonder whether it was a good idea to switch his usual brand of PG-13 lunacy for a harder-edged R-rated comedy. But more on him in a moment. The animals of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (and, more likely, their DreamWorks Animation keepers) are celebrating a second week as kings of the chart jungle, with the ‘toon taking $35.5 million and cresting $120.4 million in the US alone. Also staying in place is Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which dropped 60% but still made $20.2 million.
In third place is bewigged movie musical Rock Of Ages, which didn't prove quite the crowd-pleaser that Warner Bros. and their New Line team might have liked. Despite Tom Cruise giving it his all, the movie has made a relatively low $15 million. Fourth is Snow White And The Huntsman, down one place and taking $13.8 million.
In fifth it's the aforementioned Sandler with That’s My Boy. The comedian was likely hoping that his original fan base would turn out for this one and prove the sniffy critics wrong. Unfortunately, the added layer of grown up (and not Grown Ups) humour saw it crash, earning $13 million.
In sixth place is Men In Black 3, taking $10 million, with The Avengers in seventh, adding $8.8 million to its bulging US total. **The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel **is eighth with $2.2 million, just ahead of Moonrise Kingdom at ninth, taking home $2.1 million. And in 10th, What To Expect When You’re Expecting prepares to squeeze out of the top 10, earning $1.3 million.
