Mad Max: Fury Road fans, if you have sighs of relief, get ready to breathe them now. George Miller has clarified comments made earlier this week, and confirms he is planning more adventures in the wasteland.
We did rather suspect that the writer, director and all-round genius had been misquoted about no more Max movies, since he'd gone on record previously to talk up plans for sequels that explore more of the world he's been creating for all these years. “That was a completely garbled interview; I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” he tells The Wrap of the Page Six interview that made our collective hearts sink. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, another Mad Max movie will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”
Given the hefty workload and seemingly endless schedule changes for Fury Road, it does make sense that he'd want to focus on something else before diving back into the post-apocalyptic universe that most recently gave us Charlize Theron's Furiosa. Plus, there remains every chance that even if he does make more Max films, he could still hand over at least one to someone else, preferring to stay involved as a producer.
Still with an Oscar nomination in hand and a chance to shoot something a little less challenging, our main hope is that he returns to Max-land refreshed, re-invigorated and ready to get back behind the wheel. What a day. What a lovely day!
