The prequel comic is becoming an increasingly popular way of expanding awareness about movies, as well as allowing filmmakers to add in ideas and stories that can’t squeeze into the running time of the eventual film. Mad Max: Fury Road** is just the latest to leap on to that bandwagon, with several prequel comics and another staple of film tie-ins, the art book, on the way{
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint will be releasing three separate comic book prequel series, all focusing on different characters in the movie, with scripts by writer/director George Miller, co-writer Nico Lathouris and Fury Road’s storyboard artist Mark Sexton. The comics will kick off with Mad Max: Fury Road – Nux & Immortan Joe, followed at monthly intervals by Mad Max: Fury Road – Furiosa and Mad Max: Fury Road – Mad Max. Which is probably overkill on the use of Tom Hardy’s character’s name, there.
May also sees the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road – Inspired Artists, which sees artwork driven by the film from such names as Dave McKean, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gilbert Hernandez and more plus commentary from the creators and Miller himself. It’ll be out in stores May 6, followed by the first comic on May 20. As for the film, that motors in on May 15. Check out the latest trailer below.
