Though the Cannes Film Festival is often seen primarily as the launching spot for highbrow fare from respected auteurs, it’s also the place where big studio films go to generate that extra frisson of buzz. One of the larger efforts headed to the Croisette this year is Mad Max: Fury Road**, which is screening Out of Competition on May 14{
The new Max – which finds Hardy taking over the iconic role from Mel Gibson for a fresh interpretation – promises a return to the stark, desert wasteland where society has long since broken down and lawlessness rules. But in this world of blood, fire and death there are two rebels who might just be able to restore order. Max is still seeking peace of mind after the deaths of his wife and child, and now battles bad guys wherever he finds them.
Then there is Imperator Furiosa (Theron), a shaven-headed woman of action who is trying to survive a long, gruelling trip across the desert to reach her homeland. Along the way, we’ll be treated to what Miller has described as "one long chase scene", full of action and madness.
This year’s poster for the festival was debuted just a couple of days ago, featuring the iconic visage of Ingrid Bergman. The full schedule for the event, which runs between May 13 and 24 this year, is expected on April 16. Fury Road, meanwhile, rockets into UK cinemas on May 15.
