A bad guy called Cunth. A joke about date raping a man’s daughter. And more F words than you could shake a fruit tree at. Yes, it’s clear that the movie version of Saturday Night Live’s MacGruber is going to be very different from its TV origins.
How do we know? Well, the redband trailer for the first SNL movie in yonks has just gone online, and we watched it with our eyes.
What we found looks like a spot-on spoof of overly testosteronised (yes, we know that’s not a word, but MacGruber deserves new words) 80s action movies, with Will Forte’s inept one-man army getting into a series of scrapes and shoot-outs as he hunts down Val Kilmer’s mega-villain, Dieter von Cunth. Yes, that’s right – Cunth. Pronounced exactly how you’d imagine.
While there might not be a killer gag in this trailer (although we do love the nod to the SNL skits, where MacGruber constantly fails to defuse bombs with just seconds to spare), we’ve got more than enough faith in the track record of the core MacGruber team – including the godlike Kristen Wiig as MacGruber’s female assistant/love interest/feisty asskicker in her own right, Forte and director Jorma Taccone – to keep our fingers crossed.Can't. Wait.
