Yesterday, news emerged that Disney is planning to rebootHome Alone, among other things, for its Disney+ streaming service – an announcement that caused consternation from ‘90s kids across the internet. The John Hughes-Chris Columbus Christmas hit (along with its widely beloved sequel Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, and much less beloved trio of straight-to-DVD entries) is a perennial festive favourite, and with the 20th Century Fox catalogue now under Disney’s control, they look set to flex that IP.
It seems most likely that a new take on Home Alone would bring in a fresh Kevin McAllister type – a mischievous pre-teen forced to fend for himself when his parents accidentally leave him behind on a family holiday – but original star Macaulay Culkin has shared his own vision of what a present-day, Kevin-focused Home Alone would look like.
Are there three separate food dishes there? Why is that snowman cushion upside down? What’s the white thing on top of the sofa? Is that a Nintendo Gamecube controller at his feet? So many questions. To seal the deal, Culkin followed up the picture with: “Hey @Disney, call me!” He really is, as his Twitter handle says, the Incredible Culk.
It's not the first time Culkin has imagined what Kevin McAllister would be up to nowadays – in a Google advert last year he briefly reprised the role to recreate iconic scenes from the first film.
Now, let’s see how the twelve kids from Cheaper By The Dozen react to that proposed Disney reboot.
