We were already looking forward to seeing return of Idris Elba's John Luther for film spin-off Luther: The Fallen Sun. Now we know when that return will happen: 24 February in cinemas and 10 March on Netflix.

The film, written and produced by show creator Neil Cross and directed by fifth season helmer Jamie Payne, finds Luther kicking his heels behind bars, the consequences of his rule-breaking having caught up to him.

But as a creepy criminal (who, according to the man himself is played by Andy Serkis) starts taunting our taciturn hero and gruesome slayings haunt London, Luther breaks out of prison to investigate in his inimitable style (read: breaking rules).

"He’s done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he’s ended up in jail," Elba says. "That’s where we start the story. This old case that didn’t really ever get solved creeps up back into his life. And John can’t help but find a way to get involved. This bad guy is out there and he has to go out and get him."

"Luther’s an unstoppable force," says Payne. "But up to this point, he’s had to tread around the law of the police, because that was his job. Now, he’s a fugitive. This is Luther untethered. This man is so forward in his thinking and is in action. He’s like a wrecking ball, but the smartest wrecking ball you’ve ever met in your life."

As mentioned, we'll be able to see Luther do his thing in cinemas from 24 February and on Netflix on 10 March.
