You might think that zombies had had their moment in the spotlight for now, even with The Walking Dead's continued high ratings. But while other horror stalwarts might still be waiting in the wings, the shambling undead continue to be a force in movies and TV, with the very much alive Lupita Nyong'o and Josh Gad adding their skills to the cast of zom-com Little Monsters.
Not a reboot of the 1989 Fred Savage comedy pic, it's instead the story of washed up musician Dave (Alex England), who volunteers to chaperone his nephew’s class field trip after taking a shine to the plucky schoolteacher, Miss Caroline (Nyong’o). Dave’s intentions are complicated by the presence of the world’s most famous kids' show personality, and competition for Miss Caroline’s affections, Teddy McGiggle (Gad). One thing none of them bargained for however, is a sudden zombie outbreak, from which Dave and Miss Caroline must protect the children.
Abe Forsythe wrote the script for the film and has already started shooting in Sydney with backing from production companies Snoot Entertainment and Made Up Stories, and the team at Screen Australia. The film should be out next year.
Nyong'o will next be seen – in her usual manner of speaking, given the effects work – as Maz Katana in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, due 15 December. She'll also get more face time in Black Panther, which is out on 12 February next year. Gad has Murder On The Orient Express arriving this week and is already on our screens in Marshall.
