Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington have already been drafted for Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, but military platoon movies need ensembles by their very nature, so there's always room for one more. Step forward Luke Bracey, who'll follow the Point Break remake with another leading role.

Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true of Desmond T. Doss (Garfield), who served as a US Army medic in World War II and refused to kill. Despite his objections, his incredible valour saving lives saw him awarded the Medal of Honor, the first time a conscientious objector won the decoration.

Bracey will be playing Smitty, "the hard-nosed alpha dog" of the platoon who initially butts heads with Doss but comes to understand him on the road to the Battle Of Okinawa.

This is Gibson's first film as director since Apocalypto in 2006, and re-teams him with Braveheart and We Were Soldiers screenwriter Randall Wallace. Robert Schenkkan (The Pacific) co-wrote the film, which Gibson will shoot in Australia this autumn.

We'll next see Bracey as Johnny Utah, when Point Break is released on January 8.
