Pixar is on a real roll recently. After last year’s double-whammy of Onward and Soul, the studio has another brand new original film coming out later this year – a sun-kissed seaside adventure that looks like a blast of pure Vitamin D. It’s called Luca, and it takes place across a dazzling Italian summer, where two boys luxuriate in the long, lazy days. But this being Pixar, there’s a twist – the duo are mythical sea creatures, and when they come into contact with H20, they transform into fishy beings. Meanwhile, the humans in the local town have a not-so-friendly history with the mer-beings that could spell trouble if they're discovered. Check out the first teaser.
Since we’re all downright screaming for a holiday right now, Luca looks like it might be the next best thing – those stunning blue skies, the gorgeous evocation of the Italian Riviera, moonlit strolls, Nonnas with gelato, and our young duo running barefoot through grassy hillsides. If the character designs are more stylised than in Pixar’s previous outings, the whole look is incredibly detailed and drenched in glorious dappled light. And every new original tale from the studio is something to be treasured after their recent years more populated with (admittedly great) sequels.
Luca is directed by Enrico Casarosa, who previously helmed Pixar short La Luna, and it’s due in cinemas on 18 June. Stay tuned for more info – including its cast, which is yet to be announced – in the coming weeks and months.
