2018 has already been a great year for horror – just look at A Quiet Place, Ghost Stories and Hereditary. And it looks like it’s going to get even better thanks to Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria. The Call Me By Your Name director has lined up something completely different for his follow-up to that beloved coming-of-age romance – and the new trailer promises a ferocious, fearsome, full-blooded horror.
The film is a new take on Dario Argento’s 1977 classic about an American student who heads to a German dance school, only to find more than just lycra and pumps in its proverbial closets. This time it’s Dakota Johnson in the lead role as Susie, with Tilda Swinton as the imposing Madame Blanc. Guadagnino’s cast also includes the likes of Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz. His film reportedly runs a full hour longer than Argento’s – so expect a more expansive take on the material.
Stoking up the hype around the film is the reaction of one Quentin Tarantino – Guadagnino said in an interview that he showed Tarantino the film, and that it made the Kill Bill filmmaker cry. “I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me,” Guadagnino told Italian publication La Repubblica. “He was enthusiastic about it – in the end, he was crying and hugged me. Because it’s a horror movie but also a melodrama, my goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take [your eyes off the screen] because you’re captivated by the characters.”
The only slight dampener on our excitement? Well, Suspiria technically doesn’t have a UK release date yet. It’s arriving Stateside on 26 October, and it premieres in just over a week at the Venice Film Festival on 1 September. Come on, Amazon – please give us a release date for this one ASAP.
