Following the brilliantly off-kilter, Norman Rockwell, everything-is-normal poster, this French trailer for I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, has been released via Europacorp (and comes to us via Jim Carrey's website and the awesome CHUD).
For those who haven't been following the saga so far (or who didn't catch our previous story before it mysteriously vanished into the ether), the film, based on a true story, features Carrey as Steven Jay Russell, a married cop who turned con-artist to fund his secret gay lifestyle, fell in love with cellmate Phillip Morris (McGregor) in jail, and racked up an impressive hundred-year-plus sentence due to his multiple escape attempts. Hidden in the poster is the line "this really happened. It really did."
Written and produced by the team behind Bad Santa, the film caused panic among potential American distributors due to its strong gay content (Variety described a "real ride-'em-cowboy" sex scene in the first ten minutes) and was re-edited several times before picking up some decent notices at Cannes and finding a home with Consolidated Pictures Group.
The trailer aims for broad comedy (slapstick escape sequences, Bruno-type outfits) but there are glimpses in there of some quieter emotional moments that suggest this might gradually drop the laughs as it progresses.
Whatever, it's going to annoy a lot of people. Hoorah! We'll finally get to see Carrey and McGregor going at it early next year.
