Seeing as Netflix’s retro-inspired sci-fi series Stranger Things proved such a huge hit, it’s no surprise that hopes are high for the streaming service’s new take on 1960s intergalactic castaway classic Lost in Space. The kitschy campiness is gone, replaced with a sleek new aesthetic and a contemporary take on the beloved but outdated characters.
While the main elements remain the same — the Robinson family is stranded on a strange planet, accompanied by a robot and an untrustworthy doctor — it’s all been changed up for the 21st Century. For one thing Robot (yes, the robot is just called ‘Robot’) no longer looks like a vacuum cleaner attachment, instead upgraded as a hulky humanoid with a glowing purple face-screen. Then there’s the new Dr. Smith — instead of another man taking on Jonathan Harris’ classic role, it’s Parker Posey. Take a look at an exclusive image of Lost In Space’s new Robot and Dr. Smith, as seen in the first issue of Pilot TV.
“I was such a fan as a six-year-old,” Posey told Pilot TV. “I’d wake up and watch it on Sunday mornings, back when TVs had static. I loved it because there were children in quite a grown-up show and Bill Mumy [the original Will Robinson] was such an incredible actor. It’s funny to think that I’m following in his footsteps.”
